Hindi question words

Beginner

Hindi information questions usually keep the familiar sentence frame and replace the missing information with a question word. Choose क्या for what, कौन for who, कहाँ for where, कब for when and क्यों for why. Keep postpositions and agreement when the question needs them. A question requesting information has a different purpose from a question that only asks for yes or no.

Identify the information that is missing

Before choosing a Hindi question word, decide what kind of answer would satisfy your question. A person, a place, a time and a reason are different information types. If you want a location, a perfectly grammatical question about someone’s name will still fail to get the information you need. Thinking about the expected answer makes question formation a communication task instead of a translation puzzle.

Start with a short statement you already understand. In the statement meaning the book is here, the location is known. To ask for that location, replace the location expression with कहाँ. The noun and its linking verb remain. You do not need to add an equivalent of English do, does or is at the front. Hindi does not copy the English question system word for word.

The order demonstrated in this lesson is a useful neutral beginner pattern. Speakers can change word order for focus, contrast or conversational context. Our questions therefore specify the intended meaning and compare choices that differ in that meaning or in agreement. Treat the model as a reliable way to build your first questions, without concluding that every different order you later hear must be wrong.

किताब यहाँ है।

kitāb yahā̃ hai.

The book is here.

किताब कहाँ है?

kitāb kahā̃ hai?

Where is the book?

Distinguish an object from a person

Use क्या to ask what something is or what someone does, eats or reads. Use कौन to ask who a person is. The pronouns यह and वह can refer to a person or thing, so context matters. When you point to an unfamiliar object, यह क्या है is appropriate. When you point to a person in a photograph and want their identity, यह कौन है asks the intended question.

A name question has its own useful frame: आपका नाम क्या है. Here the unknown information is the name, so क्या fits even though the name belongs to a person. Choosing कौन simply because a person is involved would ignore what the sentence is asking about. The noun नाम is masculine singular and goes with आपका and है in this frame.

Keep the difference between an unknown person and an unknown fact about that person. You can know someone’s identity and still ask what their name is, what they read or what their job is. In the other direction, a कौन question can be answered with a name or a description that identifies the person. The question word points toward a category of information; it does not force one fixed length of answer.

An answer such as मेरा नाम रीना है supplies a name while retaining the familiar noun phrase and linking verb. Compare that with यह रीना है, which identifies a person you are pointing to. Both answers can contain the same name, but they respond to different questions. Use the whole exchange to check your interpretation. If a reply sounds incomplete, identify what information the speaker still needs rather than immediately changing the word order. This approach is especially useful when a short spoken answer leaves out words already clear from the question.

यह क्या है?

yah kyā hai?

What is this?

यह कौन है?

yah kaun hai?

Who is this?

आपका नाम क्या है?

āpkā nām kyā hai?

What is your name?

Ask where and keep the relationship

कहाँ asks where. When the intended meaning includes from, add से after कहाँ. The expression कहाँ से therefore asks where from. The postposition remains after the question word just as it follows a known location in a statement. A learner who removes से may accidentally change a question about origin into a question about present location.

Compare आप कहाँ हैं with आप कहाँ से हैं. The first asks where the addressee is. The second asks where the addressee is from. Both use respectful आप and plural respectful हैं, even when you address one person. Neither sentence requires you to decide the addressee’s gender because this linking verb form does not express gender in the present.

Other postpositions are selected by the relationship you mean. A question about whom you are with uses किसके साथ. A question about what is inside a particular room can retain कमरे में while using क्या elsewhere in the sentence. Do not automatically place a postposition after every question word; preserve the one required by the actual phrase. This lesson uses a few complete expressions so that the relationship stays clear while you learn their internal grammar.

आप कहाँ हैं?

āp kahā̃ haĩ?

Where are you?

आप कहाँ से हैं?

āp kahā̃ se haĩ?

Where are you from?

आप किसके साथ हैं?

āp kiske sāth haĩ?

Who are you with?

Keep the origin relationship

Ask a visitor respectfully where they are from.

  1. Choose आप for respectful address.
  2. Use कहाँ से because the missing fact is origin.
  3. Retain respectful हैं.

आप कहाँ से हैं?

Separate when from why

कब asks for a time. क्यों asks for a reason. A meeting may be at three o’clock because the room is available then, but the time and the reason are still different answers. Choose the question word according to the particular gap in your knowledge. Do not treat both words as general signals that you are uncertain.

In क्लास कब है, the class is already identified and the missing information is its time. The English translation naturally puts when first, while the Hindi model leaves the noun before the question word. In आप यहाँ क्यों हैं, the location is already given and the question asks why the addressee is here. The linking verb remains respectful हैं. The words surrounding the question word provide essential clues to what is being requested.

A grammatically correct why question can sound direct in conversation. Tone, relationship and the situation affect whether it feels curious, concerned or challenging. This lesson teaches the meaning of the form rather than promising that one phrase is equally suitable everywhere. When practicing, imagine a neutral situation such as arranging a class or checking a friend’s plan. An explanation can be brief; a beginner does not need a complicated subordinate clause to recognize what a why question requests.

क्लास कब है?

klās kab hai?

When is the class?

आप यहाँ क्यों हैं?

āp yahā̃ kyõ haĩ?

Why are you here?

Ask how with the appropriate agreement

The forms कैसा, कैसी and कैसे can ask about a person’s condition or about a thing’s quality. They behave like a changing adjective in these uses. Masculine singular uses कैसा, feminine uses कैसी, and masculine plural or respectful masculine uses कैसे. In a greeting addressed respectfully to a man, आप कैसे हैं is the standard model. Addressed respectfully to a woman, आप कैसी हैं keeps हैं while changing the adjective form.

The two agreement decisions are separate. The word कैसी reflects feminine agreement, while हैं reflects respectful address. Do not change हैं to है merely because the person is one woman. Likewise, when asking about a feminine noun such as किताब, use कैसी in यह किताब कैसी है. The noun’s grammatical gender matters even though a book is not a person.

कैसे also appears as a manner question meaning how, as in asking how someone does an action. That use is not simply an adjective describing a feminine or masculine object. Learn the complete pattern before extending an agreement rule. The examples here concentrate on condition and quality, where the agreeing noun or person is explicit. This limited contrast gives you a dependable starting point without pretending every English how question has the same Hindi structure.

आप कैसे हैं?

āp kaise haĩ?

How are you? Addressed respectfully to a man.

आप कैसी हैं?

āp kaisī haĩ?

How are you? Addressed respectfully to a woman.

यह किताब कैसी है?

yah kitāb kaisī hai?

What is this book like?

Ask whose without changing the owner’s identity

For whose, use किसका, किसकी or किसके according to the possessed noun and its grammatical form. The choice is not determined by whether the unknown owner is a man or a woman. A book is feminine, so यह किसकी किताब है asks whose book this is. A room is masculine singular in the direct form, so यह किसका कमरा है asks whose room it is.

This is the same agreement idea you met with मेरा, मेरी and मेरे. The object of possession controls the visible ending. In a question you leave the owner unknown, but you still know the gender and number of the thing you are asking about. That makes it possible to choose an ending before hearing the answer.

Before a postposition, the surrounding phrase may need oblique forms. This lesson does not ask you to master every such combination at once. Begin with a complete possession question in the direct form, then connect it to the separate postposition lesson when the sentence becomes longer. A practical check is to point to the item and name it first. If the noun is किताब, choose the feminine question form even if you expect the answer to identify a male owner.

यह किसकी किताब है?

yah kiskī kitāb hai?

Whose book is this?

यह किसका कमरा है?

yah kiskā kamrā hai?

Whose room is this?

Choose an ending for the known item

Ask whose book this is.

  1. The owner is unknown, so use a whose form.
  2. किताब is feminine, so choose किसकी.
  3. Keep यह and singular है around the noun phrase.
Compare your reasoning

यह किसकी किताब है?

Keep a yes or no question distinct

At the beginning of a whole statement, क्या can introduce a yes or no question. In क्या यह आपकी किताब है, the speaker is checking a proposed fact: this is your book. An answer such as yes or no directly addresses that question. In यह क्या है, the word क्या fills the unknown identity of the object and requests information such as book or pen.

The same written word therefore has different jobs in these two frames. Read the entire sentence before deciding what answer type is expected. It is not enough to spot क्या and translate it as what every time. Notice whether the sentence already contains a complete possible statement. Your book is a complete identity proposal; an unidentified this still needs an identity.

Speakers can also ask yes or no questions through intonation without initial क्या. This is common in conversation, but a text exercise cannot reliably supply the full intonation of a spoken exchange. Initial क्या makes the beginner model explicit. Before trying the choices, produce one location question and one ownership check. Then predict the kind of reply each needs. This last step catches many meaning errors that a mechanical check of spelling would miss.

क्या यह आपकी किताब है?

kyā yah āpkī kitāb hai?

Is this your book?

यह क्या है?

yah kyā hai?

What is this?

हाँ, यह मेरी किताब है।

hā̃, yah merī kitāb hai.

Yes, this is my book.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Ask respectfully where someone is, then where they are from.

Compare with a model

आप कहाँ हैं? आप कहाँ से हैं? (āp kahā̃ haĩ? āp kahā̃ se haĩ?)

Where are you? Where are you from?

The second question preserves से to ask origin rather than current location.

  • Use respectful हैं in both.
  • Keep से after कहाँ.

Your turn 2

Ask whose room this is and whose book this is.

Compare with a model

यह किसका कमरा है? यह किसकी किताब है? (yah kiskā kamrā hai? yah kiskī kitāb hai?)

Whose room is this? Whose book is this?

The possessed nouns choose the endings: masculine कमरा and feminine किताब.

  • Do not choose the ending from the owner’s gender.
  • Keep singular है in these two questions.
