Read useful units, not isolated English replacements

Devanagari combines consonants with vowel signs. The vowel lesson introduces independent forms, dependent signs, nasal marks, and the difference between visible spelling and natural pronunciation. Begin there if the script is new to you. Read each example with its meaning, then cover the transliteration and identify the same written units again.

Listen for contrasts the spelling preserves

The consonant lesson develops aspiration, voicing, dental and retroflex sounds, and clusters. An English approximation can help you start, but it can also conceal a meaningful contrast. Use the university references for spoken models and focus on one distinction at a time. The practice questions check your understanding of the system; they do not grade pronunciation.

Move from recognition to a message

Both lessons include writing tasks before the choice challenges. Try a task without looking at the model, then compare one decision at a time. Once you can recognize the common shapes, use them in the first sentence lessons. There is no need to memorize every rare conjunct before introducing yourself or describing a book.
