Mandarin Chinese sentence basics

Build Mandarin identities, questions, possessive phrases, and counted amounts through four connected beginner lessons.

Begin with the message you want to express

The identity lesson introduces 是 with noun descriptions of people and things, then distinguishes ordinary adjective descriptions, location, age, and possession. Start there before treating every English form of be as the same Mandarin construction. The questions lesson reuses those predicates and shows how the answer should match the content being asked about.

Expand the noun phrase without losing its structure

The possession lesson adds an owner before 的 and explains when a known noun can be omitted. The counting lesson adds numbers, classifiers, and demonstratives around familiar nouns. Together they help you distinguish my book, this book, two books, and whose book while keeping the central noun and its meaning visible.

Build an exchange before choosing an option

Each lesson includes a complete worked example and a second guided attempt. Cover the models and try the production prompts, then use the explained choices to locate a misunderstanding rather than merely record a score. The conversation ordering activity joins introductions, identity questions, respectful address, and a question about possession in one coherent first meeting.
